The Radeon R9 Fury X only has 4 GB of memory

The Fiji graphics processor from AMD will be the first in the world with the new memory type HBM. With the help of close integration, significantly lower power consumption and higher bandwidth are offered compared to GDDR5. However, the fact that the technology is new entails certain disadvantages, such as a significant price increase and capacity limitation.

The Fiji graphics processor is surrounded by four HBM memory capsules.

Fiji-based AMD Radeon R9 Fury X has long been predicted to get 4 GB of video memory as a direct result of the use of HBM, something that may seem to rhyme badly with a price tag of over 10,000 kronor. However, the memory supplier SK Hynix has plans to release HBM in larger capacities in the future, which has given hope that the graphics card can be released with 8 GB.

Now, however, SweClockers has in several places had to confirm that the Radeon R9 Fury X only gets 4 GB of video memory. This is the same as for the Radeon R9 290X and half of the 8 GB that comes with the refreshed R9 390X. It is also significantly lower than the 12 and 6 GB that apply to the main opponents Geforce GTX Titan X and even fresh GTX 980 Ti.

It is worth mentioning, however, that Fiji is probably gifted with the same memory compression that AMD introduced with Tonga. The company has previously only emphasized that it provides a higher efficient memory bandwidth, but should also help to accommodate more and larger textures in a given memory capacity compared to older graphics processors.

AMD is expected to give another taste of the Radeon R9 Fury X at the gaming fair E3 on June 18, but when the graphics card will be launched is not yet known.
