They helped Elon Musk with the cosmic vision, and now they design autonomous and energy-saving trains

Matt Soule, John Howard, and Ben Stabler had worked as engineers at SpaceX for a long time, but decided to quit “under Elon Musk” and set up their own company, Parallel Systems. It recently raised $ 49.55 million to turn its autonomous and energy-efficient trains into something real.

Parallel Systems is developing its unique autonomous and energy-saving electric trains

We set up Parallel to enable railways to open up new markets, increase the use of infrastructure and improve service quality to accelerate the decarbonisation of freight transport. Our business model is to provide railroads with the tools to transform parts from the US $ 700 billion shipping industry to railroads. Parallel can also help ease the supply chain crisis by allowing cheap and regular flow of goods to and from ports

Explains Matt Soule, co-founder and CEO of Parallel Systems.

It all sounds decent and promising, but how then does Parallel Systems want to be successful? It all comes down to the company’s innovative carriages, which have their own propulsion and subsystems, so they can connect with each other and benefit from lower air resistance while driving in tandem. However, they may separate from each other at any time when reaching their destination / track crossing, wait for a turnout to change and move the other way to their destination.

The combination of carriages and locomotives in one, however, is not the end of innovation, because the Parallel System solution also uses lighter materials and a more aerodynamic structure. In addition, these wagons consume only 25% of the energy needed to produce a truck, despite the possibility of carrying up to 58,000 kg of cargo and an impressive range of about 800 km on one hour of loading.

The company says its wagons / locomotives are 10 times faster than traditional trains, equipped with advanced sensors that can quickly detect any obstacles on the track and a redundant braking system 10 times more efficient.
