The masks have been with us for almost two years. The related difficulty in breathing and talking will plague us for a long time to come, but scientists are still working on perfecting the face masks, the latest manifestation of which is a discovery from Seoul National University, unveiled in ACS Nano.

An intelligent mask that reacts to the environment was created

Designed by a team of Korean scientists, the prototype mask contains two porous filtering membranes made of electro-spun elastomer nanofibers. One is on the left side and the other is on the right side of the user’s face. Both, in turn, are surrounded and connected to a ring-shaped pneumatic stretching mechanism which is connected to a lightweight portable device that includes an air sensor, an air pump and a microcontroller. Te is connected directly to the artificial intelligence in the cloud.

When the sensor detects a high concentration of harmful particles in the air, as well as the user’s relatively normal breathing rate, it will start the air pump. This causes the ring to inflate and become thicker, allowing the bonded diaphragm to remain relaxed. As a result, the pores of the membrane remain the smallest, offering the highest degree of filtration.

After detecting clean air and faster breathing, everything returns to normal, reducing the filtration level by only 6%, but significantly facilitating breathing. Currently, plans require making this technology lighter and less bulky, which could involve eliminating the pump and switching to a non-pneumatic stretching mechanism.
