Thor 660 test. Handy, great-looking and wireless

The Genesis company has expanded its offer with a completely new keyboard in the form of Thor 660, available in two color versions – white and black. Although the set of functions proposed by the manufacturer is impressive, it is not new to the market. However, even despite my initial reluctance, Thor 660 finally made the competition hide.

Box and accessories included

Traditional box and standard accessories as for a keyboard with a built-in battery. In one sentence, you can describe the first moments of Thor 660, which comes to us in a packaging that is characteristic of Genesis. During transport, it is protected only by some form of foam, and the set is completed with a useful instruction manual and a 150-cm USB-A to USB-C cable in an ordinary rubber cover.

Materials, design and workmanship

Physically, the Thor 660 is an example of a 60% keyboard, which is a very, very truncated format that brings the trend with the TKL models to an even higher level. Who are such keyboards made for? As per my eye, it is primarily for players who want to either have an order at the desk or appreciate high mobility. Unfortunately, work on them is made difficult by the lack of direct access, among others to the arrows while typing, or the numeric panel, which usually extends the number of e.g. macros and keyboard shortcuts.

However, the Thor 660 differs from other models of this type, because although it does not have feet to increase the angle, it provides the base with an exceptionally large angle that makes the use of the keyboard more enjoyable. As a result, however, this model is not the smallest in its class, which is magnified by the format of the built-up hard plastic housing, which, fortunately, does not bend when force is exerted on it.

The very design of this keyboard may be appealing because of its ‘clunky’ nature, as well as the impression that the entire block is made from one piece of plastic. Genesis, however, took care of a few designer accessories, putting its name on a space, adding a description of additional key functions that give the impression of being illuminated (they are not), or adding a circle with information about the model in the form of a glossy plastic.

In addition to the keys, the keyboard from the outside has four thick oblong anti-slip pads on each corner (they provide decent stability), a simple on / off switch on the bottom that determines the keyboard’s operating mode, and a USB-C port on the right side of the back edge.

Software, features and wireless mode

All those willing to customize Thor 660 to a higher degree, can download from the Genesis website an application in the “student did, it works” style, allowing you to change the functions of the keys, activate various backlight modes and customize them, set the game mode (in terms of deactivating the Windows key and characteristic combinations) or creating complex macros. The application, however, is not completely needed, because the configuration can be performed at the configuration level by highlighting specific keys in the user mode or recording macros “on the fly”.

Most importantly, despite only 61 buttons, Genesis provided the Thor 660 with a number of hotkeys that relate to both multimedia and specific functions, and of course the backlight in terms of brightness (4 + 1 deactivating), effect or color. It even took care of the possibility of replacing the functions of the WSAD keys with traditional arrows and, above all, having fun with the wireless mode.

That’s right – Thor 660 can be connected either traditionally, i.e. wired, or atypically, because wirelessly, using the built-in 3000-mAh battery with a durability of up to several dozen hours with the backlight at the maximum level and several hundred with its deactivation. All thanks to, among others hibernation mode, from which we wake the keyboard after pressing the first button.

The very pairing of the Thor 660 with other devices is trivial, the signal remains stable and does not cause any problems. In addition, we can connect up to three devices with this keyboard at one time and switch between them with a simple combination.

The Thor 660 illumination system can impress

Although I am far from admiring the “RGB colors” in keyboards, the first time Thor 660 was turned on, the quality of the effect positively surprised me. The LEDs turned out to be very bright, but also amazingly reflect the colors, while the double-injection keys light up evenly not only in the font, but also in their milky base, which spills “RGB power” all over the desk .

The best results? Definitely the pride of Genesis, the original Prismo effect, but the white version of the Thor 660 also looks great with a mix of “retro” candy colors in various configurations. As is usually the case, the final effect is mainly enhanced by the white color of the housing and the keys, which reflect light better, rather than absorb it, as in the case of the black finish.

Switch test

In the case of Thor 660, we are doomed to use Gateron Red switches, i.e. for many solutions even better than Cherry MX or Kailh. I am not surprised, because, as always, in this model Genesis Gatreon Red are an example of great switches for players with high responsiveness and a level of dynamics. This applies even to those wider keys with brackets that additionally stabilize the keys.

Although they have the traditional 4mm travel path and are activated at 2mm, they require 45 grams of force, not 50 grams. At the same time, they maintain a uniformly linear characteristic and a silent mode of operation, although of course they still make noise (generate knocks) when the keys are pressed against the housing.

Thor 660 test – summary

Currently, the Thor 660 keyboards are available for PLN 279 and after this test I am sure that if you have the option, be sure to go for the white version to ensure a really great backlight effect. However, apart from RGB itself, I must admit that the Thor 660 is a great example of using the keyboard budget to offer as much as possible for the least possible without sacrificing too much.

So Genesis saved on the amount of materials, keeping the Thor 660 in 60% format, but instead of taking the savings for itself, it equipped the model with a wireless mode, a large battery and great LEDs, which are an addition to the red Gateron switches, good workmanship and thoughtful design. The Thor 660 may not be the most compact 60% keyboard, but it will certainly be more enjoyable for many than other models. Hence our recommendation:
