Tips for cleaning cloth and faux leather headphones

Things get dirty, and this is inevitable. If we also talk about a peripheral such as headphones, which are in contact with our skin, hair and ears, even more (and even more if we use makeup). So, both to keep them as new as possible and for hygiene reasons, here are some tips to keep clean, as far as possible, the earmuffs of the headphones.

How to clean cloth headphones

The cloth pads They are more likely to take dirt than synthetic leather, since it is porous material that allows perspiration. Over time, the cloth pads will darken and even acquire unpleasant odors, so it is advisable to do a little cleaning every so often. This same process is valid for those headphones with velvet pads.

If possible, it is advisable to disassemble the earmuffs to clean them. The first step will be to clean the outside of the headphones with a cloth dampened with soap and warm water. Once done, we dry it with paper towels and then it is advisable to let them air dry for at least 24 hours just in case. It is imperative not to use a dryer, as it could damage them.

Then, with a cloth or microfiber cloth moistened with sanitary alcohol or hand sanitizer, we will gently clean the outside of the pads in all corners. If necessary, we can use swabs of the ears also moistened with disinfectant to reach all corners. Finally, it is also advisable to let them air dry, face down on a paper towel to help absorb moisture.

If we carry out this process periodically and regularly, we will keep the fabric headphones in good condition for a long time.

How to clean faux fur headphones

The initial cleaning process is exactly the same as for the skin ones, since we are talking about the structure. Where they differ, it is in the cleaning of the earmuffs, which in this case are those of synthetic leather and not of cloth. To do this, we will simply need a microfiber cloth or similar and we will moisten it with warm soapy water, to proceed to gently rub all the areas of the pads.

To finish cleaning the headphones, it is always advisable to use wet ear sticks with disinfectant of hands to help eliminate bacteria and, at the same time, reach corners where we could not reach with the rag. Similarly, the process ends by letting them dry for a few hours, to be able to be on a paper towel to absorb moisture.

How often do you have to clean them?

Depends on the person. Obviously, a "standard" user is not the same as one who suffers from dandruff problems, or those users or users who usually wear headphones with makeup on their faces, because in those cases they will get dirty much faster and we will have to clean them with higher frequency

The recommendation is to perform a thorough cleaning at least every six months for pure hygiene, reducing it to every three months if we want to keep them in optimal conditions and use them daily. For people with the aforementioned problems, it would be advisable to clean once a month, especially for makeup since it could leave a mark on the fabric pads permanently.
