According to recent industry reports, AMD would be working with TSMC to design a custom version of the 5nm node special for its 2021 products. This would allow to optimize the process for its products as much as possible, thus reducing consumption and maximizing frequencies.
This is something that Nvidia has been doing for several years, and has proven to be highly effective, exceeding the consumption-performance of AMD GPUs by up to 100% thanks to the use of Nvidia Finfet, a process designed exclusively for Nvidia instead of use a generic process. Now AMD would be looking to do the same for both its processors and graphics cards, seeking to maximize the performance and frequencies of its chips to be as competitive as possible.
This new process would debut on Zen 4 processors and RDNA3 graphics that will arrive at the end of next year, allowing AMD to be placed in a solid position in both markets. It will be interesting to see the evolution in consumption-performance especially of the graphics thanks to the use of a custom 5nm process, although we still have to wait almost a year and a half for it.
There is still nothing officially confirmed, so you have to take this information with tweezers. For now they are just rumors, although it would obviously be good if they became a reality.
Are you looking forward to AMD's 5nm products coming next year?
