Which courier company to choose for the holidays?

The holiday season is in full swing. Do you catch promotions like crazy, credit card warms up from buying more gifts? The last step remains for you – shipping it all home. We know what’s going on when you have to decide on one of the options and you can’t be sure which one is the best. Will everything get complete? Will it be on time? Or maybe you will never see some of them with your eyes? We answer this question through our courier test. Here are 12 packages all shipped on the same day. Who passed the exam and who failed? We invite you!

In our test, we prepared 12 packages with dimensions of 300 mm x 200 mm x 150 mm. We packed them one glass of Pepco. You can see the way of packing and the things used in the pictures below.

The glasses were wrapped in bubble wrap and the empty space in the carton was filled with airbags. This should ensure your safety while traveling.

The couriers were ordered on December 6, 2018 at around 4 p.m. We used platforms such as SendIt, Furgonetka or Zlapkuriera to order. We used them because you can immediately see the price and comparison with other couriers. It is also a very convenient way to select and order a package pickup. On the same day, the parcels were sent at postage points. Shipments were sent from Wrocław to Warsaw.

Shipment

Let’s start with the prices. Point-based shipments turn out to be the cheapest. Often, however, the difference is not so big. The cheapest is the courier of Poczta Polska 48. The prices of UPS, TNT and Patron Service differ from the rate. The last two were ordered by the Zlapkurier website. A quick look at the Patron Service website and you can see that the package can be shipped much cheaper. Another issue is the pickup hours. In most cases, you can choose a convenient date and the courier will show up. Of course, it may be a little late, but everything is within reasonable limits. Usually it is possible to choose two days, sometimes more. The most convenient, however, are postage at the point – unless you find large queues at the Polish Post Office. This is where the parcel locker wins, where sending the parcel is easy. The only company that contacted me prior to picking up was UPS. It is big because you can agree on convenient times with the courier for both parties.

In the case of almost every courier, you had to print and stick a consignment note yourself. Only Geis had it with him. This is a nice option, but it creates problems when sending multiple packages – you can get lost.

Almost all parcels were picked up by couriers the day after ordering. Only the Patron Service did not collect the parcel until the time of writing. Despite contacting the hotline and sending a reminder by them (interestingly, it was to Inpost – was Patron Service ordering couriers from other companies?) Within 3 working days the package was still with me. After this time, I canceled the order – how long can I wait? We strongly do not recommend ordering through this company here. Don’t waste your time.

As for the acceptance protocol, only the UPS courier did not sign the confirmation of receipt. Confirmations are generated by portals, so you can go ahead and get a guarantee that your package has been received.

Finally, an interesting point – after canceling the order at Zlapkuriera, you should send them an e-mail asking them to return the money. The answer is instant, but they are returned to the account on the site. When asked how I can get money on my account, I received an e-mail:

In the case of Sendit, there have never been problems with this – the money is returned to the bank account. The lapkurier makes it quite difficult to refund the money to the account – writing a letter is completely pointless and hardly anyone wants to do it, and we are not sure if the letter will arrive.

Reception

While sending parcels (except for one case) was not particularly difficult, we were so afraid of their receipt. It is difficult to conduct a test in the middle of the Christmas rush, but the beginning of December is a time when there is already increased traffic in sorting plants. Anyway, it is enough to go out to the city street to see the circulating vans of the most popular courier companies. In my neighborhood, one of the side streets always makes a parking space for their cars. There, couriers stop for several minutes to verify addresses and routes. And so I was walking by a standing DHLu and UPS van where two couriers were chatting cheerfully: And how? – asks the first. Well, massacre today – replies the second – everyone at home, I have to run.

Contrary to our fears, it turned out that all couriers delivered packages on time. The fastest was… parcel lockers. The parcel from Krakow to Warsaw was delivered in less than 24 hours! More precisely, it arrived at the recipient’s place at 13:04 the next day. Honestly? We are surprised, the more so as it is not difficult to come across negative opinions on the web.

DPD was in second place. Here is a surprise, because the package was delivered on Saturday, which usually does not happen. The box is in perfect condition, as if it had been passed from hand to hand. An hour later, an InPost courier appeared at the door. Here, unfortunately, speed did not go hand in hand with quality. The packaging looked as if it had been crushed by a pallet or solid goods on the back of the car. If not for the solid protection of the glass – we would probably get glass pieces.

On Monday, for the entire 12 hours (from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), Geis, DHL, TNT, FedEx, Courier 24, Kurier 48 and the parcel by registered mail arrived in turn. Each of them showed no signs of damage, bruising or any breach.

What is worth emphasizing is communication. UPS, GLS and InPost sent SMS notifications, with GLS and Pocztex performing the best here, providing a direct phone number to their employee. The former was also thoughtful and simply called the recipient before arriving to make sure that anyone was home. In the case of FedEx and DPD, we regularly received email notifications. What is noteworthy is that the given time intervals have been respected. So if, for example, FedEx informed us that a delivery attempt would be made between 9:00 am and 11:00 am, an employee would actually be at the door at that time.

In principle, each form of delivery made it possible to easily redirect the parcel or manage the delivery in the form of a link in an email message or SMS information.

Conclusions

It seems that apart from Patron Service, courier companies are logistically prepared for the upcoming wave of holiday orders. Does this test clearly identify a winner? Well, exceptionally this time we have solid draws. The difference in deliveries was literally an hour, although InPost was the fastest in the case of parcel machines. If we care about reliability – we would not choose courier services from them, unless we are sending soft, flexible items.

On the other hand, Patron Service is the worst, as it was unable to pick up the parcel from the sender for several days, and … Polish Post in the case of non-priority parcels. On the same day that we started the test, we ordered the goods from a completely different store this way, and unfortunately, the package is still delivered today.

It is worth remembering that the test took place two weeks before Christmas, therefore, in the greatest period of turbulence, these data may be distorted, which we have already experienced on our own skin. Therefore, as the old adage (and the oldest Indians) says: better not to wait for the last minute before shipping!
