Windows 11 can now be installed on the Steam Deck

According to new information revealed, Windows 11 can now be installed on the Steam Deck. Valve always intended to allow Steam Deck owners to install Windows on the device instead of the Linux-based Steam OS it came with. Now the company has taken Windows compatibility a step further by removing a major barrier to installing Windows 11.

Probably the most notable detail in the patch notes for the latest Steam Deck OS beta is added support for Trusted Platform Module (fTPM) firmware, which allows users to install Windows 11 on the device. The BIOS feature is a common solution to what became a controversial requirement for Windows 11 when it was first released.

What requirements does the Steam Deck need to install Windows 11

For a system to officially support Windows 11, it must have TPM 2.0, which initially angered many users because it restricted OS support to relatively recent CPUs.. This requirement can be met by dedicated hardware or software-based fTPM.

Valve released the first Windows drivers for the Steam Deck in early March, but the initial lack of fTPM support meant that the device could only run Windows 10 until now. AMD hasn’t finalized audio drivers yet, so any sound from Steam Decks that work with Windows will have to come through USB-C or Bluetooth.. Additionally, Valve is still working on a dual-boot capable installer, so users will have to choose between Windows and Steam OS for now.

The latest beta also adds a setting to run games with unlimited framerates which can be found in the quick access menu under the Performance tab.. In addition, Valve has improved the battery life of the Steam Deck in idle or low-use situations.

On the other hand, the second batch of Steam Decks should also be arriving to those users who ordered it during the second call and should receive their consoles in Q 2 of 2022, that is, between April and June of this year, We will have to continue waiting for the console to enter local retail (retail sale / sale in stores) to be able to access this device. That’s the way things are.
