Windows Shift + S not working Windows 7: Windows 10 search does not work (Windows 10) Tips for installing, configuring, and working with Microsoft Windows: The search function in Windows 10 must be used much more often than in previous versions of the OS: with the help of search you can quickly find an application, file, setting, system function or even search the Internet. 

However, in some cases, Windows 10 search stops working. When it tries to find any application or file, Windows Search returns an empty list (this usually happens after a system upgrade / update). In this article, we’ve put together a few basic tips that should help if your Windows 10 search doesn’t work in the Start menu, taskbar, or other Windows interface elements.

On February 5, 2020, for Windows 10 users, the search stopped working en masse (generating blank results). The problem is related to the temporary unavailability of Bing’s cloud search services, and is being addressed by disabling search integration with Bing (see the solution below).  

RESTART THE SEARCH SERVICES IN WINDOWS 10/ 7

The Cortana process is responsible for searching the taskbar – SearchUI .eXE . If your Windows 10 taskbar search doesn’t work, try running this procedure again:

1. start Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del);
2. Go to the details tab ;
3. Find it in the list of SearchUI .eXE processes , right-click it and select Remove Task ;
4. Finish the procedure the same way. SearchApp .eXE ;
5. The next time you try to search Windows 10, this process will restart automatically.

WINDOWS 10 MENU SEARCH DOES NOT WORK

If your Windows 10 search doesn’t just work in the Start menu, try the following solution:

1. Complete the Explorer process (Explorer.exe) by right-clicking on an empty spot on the taskbar with the Ctrl + Shift keys pressed (select Exit Explorer) or using the task manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc);
2. Start Registry Editor from Task Manager (File -> Run New Task -> regedit.exe);
3. Delete the following registry key HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ FolderTypes \ ef 87b 4cb -f 2ce -4785-8658-4ca 6c 63e 38c 6 \ TopViews \ 00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000000000 . In the 64-bit version of Windows 10, you must delete the HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Wow6432Node \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ FolderTypes \ ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6 \ TopViews \ 00000000-0000-0000-0000-0000-0000-0000-0000-0000 registry key
4. Run Explorer.exe via the task manager (File -> Run New Task -> Istrar.exe).

In Windows 10 Creator Update (1703) and later, there is another common problem that may not work as a search. In the section parameters -> confidentiality -> Background applications ( settings -> privacy -> application background ), enable the option ” Allow applications to run in the background” ( let applications run in the background ). When this option is disabled, the search for newly installed applications may fail.

If you did not find this feature, you can enable it through the registry:

1. To do this, go to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ BackgroundAccessApplications registry branch ;
2. Create a new DWORD parameter (32 bits) named GlobalUserDisabled and value 0 ;
3. Then change the value of the BackgroundAppGlobalToggle parameter to 1 in the HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Search registry branch; Or you can change these parameters from the command line:
   REG ADD HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ BackgroundAccessApplications / v GlobalUserDisabled / t REG_DWORD / d 0 / f
REG ADD HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Search / v BackgroundAppGlobalToggle / t REG_DWORD / d 1 / f
4. Restart the computer.

Make sure it’s Windows indexing. To do this:

1. Open the service.msc console ;
2. In the list of services, look for Windows Search ;
3. Check that the service is running and that the startup type is automatic;
4.  Starting / restarting WSearch;
5. Now open the classic Control Panel and open the object parameters index (Control Panel \ All items in the Control Panel \ Options indexing);
6. Make sure that indexing of all required locations is selected (at least indexing should be enabled Start Menu, Users, you can add your local drives and Outlook);
7. Click the Advanced button , and in the Troubleshooting section, click the Restore button ;
8. The reoxidation process can take a long time. Wait for it to finish.

remark . Make sure there is enough free space on the system drive. In some cases, the size of the Windows Search index file (Windows.edb) can be quite large.

TROUBLESHOOTING INDEXING AND SEARCH SERVICES

Try the built-in Index Diagnostic Tool (Troubleshooter) to correct bugs. To do this:

1. Go to Settings -> Search -> Windows Search. Scroll down the list and click ” Run the Index Troubleshooter to resolve common search issues “; You can run the Search Error Correction Wizard from the command line:msdt.exe -ep Windows Help id SearchDiagnostic
2. The Search and Index Search and Index Wizard starts;
3. Select your issue (most likely it will be “ Files do not appear in search results ” / “Files do not appear in search results”) and click Next;
4. Wait while the search and index troubleshooter scans your computer and tries to correct the error, then restart your computer and check the search.

RE-REGISTER UNIVERSAL WINDOWS 10 APPLICATIONS

If you have Cortana Voice Assistant installed on your computer (I remind you that there is no Russian version of Cortana yet), re-registering all universal applications on the system can solve the problem of inactive Windows 10 search. as an administrator run the command:

Get-AppXPackage -Svaki korisnici | Foreach Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$ ($ _. InstallLocation) \ AppXManifest.xml"

After completing the command, restart the computer.

WINDOWS 10 SEARCH DOESN’T WORK IF BING INTEGRATION IS ENABLED

February 5, 2020 Many users have noticed that taskbar search does not work in Windows 10 1909 and 1903. The toolbar search window opens, but when you enter any query, the search returns blank results.

The most likely cause of the problem is the inaccessibility of Bing cloud search services. The fact is that Windows 10 by default sends everything you enter in the Start Menu search to its servers, which return the search results to you from Bing.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to disable Windows 10 search integration with Microsoft Bing.

1. Run Registry Editor (Win + R -> regedit.exe);
2. Go to registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Search \;
3. Change the value of the BingSearchEnabled and CortanaConsent parameters to 0 ;If these registry settings are missing, make them manually (type REG_DWORD 32 bit). You can create and modify these parameters with the following commands:
   REG ADD HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Search / v BingSearchEnabled / t REG_DWORD / d 0 / f
REG ADD HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Search / v CortanaConsent / t REG_DWORD / d 0 / f
4. Restart Explorer.exe or restart the computer.

This solution will help if you have a search box open, but nothing appears when you enter search text. At the time of writing this version, Microsoft engineers have already solved the problem with Bing and Windows Search Services has started working. Although in my opinion the integration of Windows 10 search with Bing should be disabled forever.

SEARCHING IN WINDOWS 10 SETTINGS DOES NOT WORK

Windows 10 Settings has its own search box for quick navigation to system settings. If your parameter search stops working:

1. Start File Explorer and go to the directory % LocalAppData% \ Paketi \ windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy \ LocalState;
2. Open the properties of the indexed folder, click the “Other” button, and make sure that the “Allow indexing of file contents in this folder next to file properties” option is enabled;
3. If the option is already enabled, disable it, click OK, and then re-enable it.

WINDOWS RESET SCRIPT

If the methods described above did not help restore the search to Windows 10, Microsoft recommends that you use the PowerShell script to reset all Windows search service settings (the script is designed for Windows 10 1903 and later).

OTHER WAYS TO SOLVE SEARCH PROBLEMS IN WINDOWS 10

If the above methods didn’t help you return the search, try the following:

• Create a new user and make sure the search works under him;
• Boot from the LiveCD and delete the folder Microsoft.Windows.Cortana _ ***in AppData \ Local \ paketi(you can also abort the process with Windows using unlocked ). After restarting, the folder will reappear and after a few minutes the search should work (this method helped several of our visitors);
• Check the integrity of system files: sfc / scannowor dism / Online / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth;
