XFX Radeon RX 480 with reference design and cover plate in production

It is now not far to AMD’s launch of the Polaris architecture. First out is the top model in the series, the Radeon RX 480, which instead of performance in the top tier will occupy the middle segment with aggressive pricing. Prior to the release, the company’s partners are in full swing preparing graphics cards for sale.

Now, new images show the Radeon RX 480 from partner manufacturer XFX, which in addition to a number of supposedly customized variants also embraces the reference design from AMD. However, it is not left completely untouched, but in addition to the ordinary cooling solution, it also has a cover plate on the back of the circuit board.

For the first time, the reference design is also screwed apart and a cooling solution can be seen under the cover, which apparently has neither a steam chamber nor a heat pipe. The cooling flange in aluminum can instead cope with a piece of cast-in copper, which in turn is cooled by a radial fan.

The basis for the Radeon RX 480 is the Polaris 10 graphics circuit according to the new Graphics Core Next 4.0 architecture, with 2,304 stream processors believed to have a base frequency of 1,080 MHz and a maximum turbo mode of 1,266 MHz. According to a screenshot in the GPU-Z, the variant that was leaked from the XFX has a factory overclocking of 1,328 MHz.

This includes a 256-bit memory bus with GDDR5 memory clocked at 8,000 MHz, which gives a theoretical bandwidth of 256 GB / s – the same as Nvidia’s new Geforce GTX 1070. The amount of graphics memory lands at 4 GB for entry-level models with a starting price of $ 199 , while more lavish solutions from $ 229 get 8 GB.

Despite promises of effective prices, AMD’s recommended prices seem to only apply to individual models that follow the reference design to the letter. Variants with higher clock frequencies and larger coolers seem to go all the way up to 299 dollars, corresponding to 3,100 kronor including VAT.
