Ryzen Mobile 4000 Series 7nm APU Revealed – Hashrate + Specs: The notebook market has not been kind to AMD in the last decade – the company has long been seen as a rebate option for those on a tight budget. It didn’t help that OEMs saw AMD only in the light that mounting bulky units with unsuitable displays and storage options meant that even retailers presented AMD only as something budget-conscious.

Everything seems to be changing. Fast forward to 2020, and notebook users are eagerly awaiting the arrival of products based on the latest AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 processors, which combine up to eight Zen 2 cores and enhanced Vega graphics for a small processor for the notebook market. AMD has already created waves with its Zen 2 cores in desktop and enterprise space, and the company has announced that it plans to place eight of these cores along with a significantly improved graphic design in a processor that has a thermal design point of 15 W. These 15 W parts are designed for ultraportable laptops, and AMD has a number of winning designs arranged to show how good the AMD system can be.

The same silicon will also go to 45 W-style laptops with a higher base frequency. These sections focus more on discrete graphics options, for gaming laptops or more powerful business designs. The gaming market (45 W), the commercial market (15 W to 45 W) and the ultraportable market (15 W) are where AMD hopes to hit hardest with new hardware.

Since the beginning of this year in January, at the annual CES trade fair, we have seen a number of first designs based on the new Ryzen Mobile 4000 family. , Acer Swift 3a ASUS Zephyrus G14 to name a few. These are all key design victories for different market segments, and the two that AMD prints the most seem to be Zephyrus and Yoga Slim. 7,

ASUS Zephyrus G14 is set as the only 14-inch notebook on the market that includes an H-series processor, a 1080p 120 Hz panel and a discrete RTX 2060 graphics card solution. The goal is to achieve something portable and high performance, with a good thermal envelope, for gamers and users who need something a little more on the go, such as video editors that need up to 32 GB of DDR4 inside. Added back panel effect with moving LEDs, only for DJs who can show off or show the logo. The Zephyrus G14 will also be the first design with an HS series processor, which we will cover a bit.

The second key system that AMD promotes is the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 ultraportable computer. It comes with a top-of-the-line Ryzen Mobile 4000 Series 15W Ryzen 7 4800U processor, and is designed to supercharge up to 25W when needed based on chassis design . Paired with Wi-Fi 6, FreeSync display and LPDDR4X, this is the system that AMD uses for all battery life demonstrations.

AMD is working with Lenovo to source these print sampling units, which should be for today, but due to the global situation, shipping has been delayed and users will start seeing reviews from next month, although they may have been available in China before.

Processors offer

As with Intel’s mobile processors, AMD’s latest lines fall into two categories. For the ultraportable and low-end gaming market, we have 15 W components called “U-Series”. For the gaming market, where separate GPUs are used, there are 45 W parts called “H series”. The commercial market will be based on both sets, and later in the year we could see mini-PC manufacturers (such as Zotac) using one or the other to strengthen their portfolio.

So far, the AMD Ryzen 9 Family 4900H has been announced, the new halo hardware Ryzen Mobile 4000. These are the first AMD processors with Ryzen 9 and we have a specific news story about them.

The H series processors are divided into H and HS parts. For all but Ryzen 9, the specifications between the two matches, except TDP, which is 45 W for H and 35 W for HS, but both are considered “Class H” processors. Technically, it is possible to tune the H series to run at 35 W, but to get the name S, it is necessary to cooperate with AMD, which we will get to later.

Due to the nature of the lower TDP, the U-series parts finally have a lower fundamental frequency than the others. These CPUs also rely more on integrated graphics, which means that the power budget is often divided between the CPU and the GPU. AMD is also looking for an interesting combination of parts without simultaneous multithreading. The lower processor, the Ryzen 3 4300U, even has half of the L3 cache disabled.

All of these CPUs support DDR4-3200 (up to 64 GB, 51.2 GB / s) and LPDDR4X-4266 (up to 32 GB68.3 GB / s) and will depend on the OEM to use: LPDDR4X should offer better idle life and top performance, but DDR4 offers more capacity. We are likely to see how the ultraportable market uses LPDDR4X, while higher level gaming systems and workstations will use DDR4.

All CPUs are PCIe 3.0 only instead of PCIe 4.0 as part of the desktop. This is primarily due to power – twice the PCIe 4.0 bandwidth requires more power, and given that storage or graphics rarely need the highest speeds, AMD believes that a product portfolio would prioritize battery life in this regard. Each chip has sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes, divided so that x8 is available for the graphics card and two x4 links for storage. For other modules, such as Wi-Fi, there are separate PCIe 6 lanes or mobile network access (4G / 5G).

CPU display support allows two 4K monitors via DisplayPort over Type-C, another 4K monitor if Thunderbolt is used, and a fourth monitor if USB 4.0 is used. AMD suggested that Renoir not need additional chips to find out how the C-type is connected – all solved on a matrix. With display and USB support, the processor enables simultaneous USB 3.2 and DisplayPort with a maximum resolution of DP v1.4 8.1G HBR3 standard in the game using display stream compression (DSC).

Details of silicon

AMD surprised us by providing some details about silicon here. The APU was fabricated using the NMC TSMC process (7nm DUV) using a 13-layer metal beam. The whole death is 9.8 billion transistors. In January, we calculated a matrix size of about 150 – 151 mm2 using a photograph. AMD states that it is 156 mm2, which in previous measurements probably does not include lines for writing.

Although we don’t have performance figures for Renoir today, due to global events, we have some details about a platform that hasn’t been released yet. They include CPU and GPU enhancements, significant changes in power management, Infinity Fabric, and the way AMD takes better control over temperatures, performance, and battery life of this type.

AMD said it expects to see more than 100 designs using Renoir this year, many of which are key designs that the company did not have in its recent memory. Given that the company was only four years ago and was surrounded by enchanted negative feedback, this is a significant increase in OEM participation and the introduction of AMD in a premium design. In the end, the consumer will win, because we should now see some serious competition in the laptop market.
