AMD and Oxide Games, a partnership to improve graphics in cloud gaming

AMD and Oxide Games have announced a multi-year partnership to jointly develop graphics technologies for the expanding cloud gaming market . Leveraging their respective skills, the two companies intend to create a set of tools and technologies for cloud rendering from scratch  “to meet the real-time needs of cloud-based gaming”.

“At AMD, we are proud of our ability to extend the boundaries of what technology can do to improve the gaming experience,” said Scott Herkelman, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD’s Graphics Business Unit. “Oxide shares this passion and is an ideal partner for us as we expand the way players have fun, while offering the quality experience they require.”

“Oxide’s motto is to bring games that have never been seen or tested before. We have developed the Nitrous Engine with this specific purpose in mind,” said Marc Meyer, president of Oxide Games. “AMD’s commitment to players and their leadership in offering cutting-edge hardware is a perfect complement to Oxide’s commitment to achieving the same excellence in software.”

AMD already has a lot of hands in cloud gaming : the company’s hardware is the basis of services such as Microsoft xCloud and Google Stadia . It is not clear which roads the agreement with Oxide Games will take, but one of the objectives is certainly to adapt the Nitrous Engine of the software house to better deploy on a cloud infrastructure.

It should also be remembered that AMD and Oxide Games have long been in excellent relationships, a commitment that in the past has seen them collaborate in optimizing games for the defunct Mantle API and the Zen architecture of Ryzen processors.
