AMD changes the name of the next generation Radeon

Ever since the launch of the first DirectX 10 graphics cards, AMD has called the graphics cards Radeon HD, followed by four digits for generation, class and segmentation. After information that new name strings have been registered in the tool GPU-Z, there are more and more indications that this may be about to change, Techpowerup reports.

In the new naming scheme, R9 is used for the highest performance class while R7 symbolizes the broad middle class. The next number tells you which generation the graphics card belongs to, in this case the second generation GCN. Then there are two numbers to mark the segmentation of the graphics processor and sometimes also the letter X, which denotes the most lavish variant.

The initial graphics cards with the worst case circuit Hawaii can thus be named Radeon R9-290 and R9-290X, where the X model is the variant with the most stream processors activated. After that, today’s Tahiti will probably turn into R9-280 and R9-280X.

As before, AMD can add the letter M tomodels designed for laptops. However, the designation HD disappears, as do extensions such as the Gigahertz Edition.

Exactly what AMD decides to name the graphics cards will be revealed in October, when Hawaii arrives just in time for the launch of Battlefield 4.
