AMD has received a major boost in sales of processors over the past two years. The key to success is the new architecture Zen and the Ryzen processors based on the same, but when it comes to graphics cards, the success has not been as real. Despite this, AMD increased sales during the second quarter of the year and surpassed rival Nvidia.
The figures come from the analysis company Jon Peddie Research, which compiled sales of graphics circuits during the second quarter of 2019. The figures refer to both integrated graphics circuits and dedicated graphics cards, which is the explanation for Intel’s dominant position. A significant part of all processors on the market are equipped with an integrated graphics circuit and these are included in the report.

Compared with the first quarter of the year, AMD’s sales of graphics circuits increased by almost 8.9 percent. During the same period, Nvidia’s sales were more or less unchanged. The report also states that sales of dedicated graphics cards fell from 29 percent during the first quarter of the year to 27 percent during the second quarter. Despite this, the PC market increased by 9.25 percent.
AMD’s strong sales are surprising as the company has not launched new products during the period. One possible explanation is a combination of stronger sales of cheaper graphics cards in the Radeon RX 500 series and Vega-based products, along with increased sales of processors with integrated graphics.
The report can be seen as a warning sign for Nvidia, which is more dependent on component sales than rivals Intel and AMD. In 2020, Intel will launch the new generation of graphics technology in the Xe family, which can strengthen the company’s presence in both integrated graphics circuits and the dedicated graphics cards that will be launched sometime during the year.
Going forward, the introduction of Nvidia’s architecture Ampere awaits, which takes the step down to 7 nanometers. AMD has previously announced that new graphics cards in the Navi family will be introduced in more segments, which includes new high-performance components that are equipped with the full-size RDNA architecture.
