“AMD Radeon RX Vega draws a hell of a lot of power”

Graphics maker AMD is investing heavily in the Vega architecture, but has so far only released models for professional applications. The company has already launched AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition and Radeon Instinct MI25 for machine learning, both with the Vega 10 graphics circuit accompanied by 16 GB HBM2 memory.

The Vega architecture for consumers will be released at the end of July and will be part of the Radeon RX Vega series. This week it was reported that AMD has started sending out graphics circuits to its partners, which are in full swing to develop customized variants before the launch at the end of July.

I’ve seen the specs of Vega RX. It needs a damn lot of power. We’re working on it, which is a start so launch is coming closer

This is more or less confirmed by a marketing manager at MSI, who at Dutch Tweakers announces that they are working on their graphics cards. At the same time, he claims that the Radeon RX Vega requires “damn much power”, but does not go into how the series compares in performance to Nvidia’s Geforce GTX 1000 series.

The fact that Vega will be an energy-intensive story is also strengthened by AMD, whose Radeon Vega Frontier Edition has a specified power consumption of 300 W for the air-cooled variant and a full 375 W for the water-cooled one. This can be compared to 250 W for Nvidia’s Geforce GTX 1080 Ti and 275 W for AMD’s latest and now over two years old flagship Radeon R9 Fury X.
