AMD Radeon VII gets support for DirectML – can be an alternative to Nvidia DLSS

When Nvidia introduced its new architecture Turing in 2018, it was accompanied by support for a number of new technologies. They are gathered under the company’s brand RTX and include, among other things, support for ray tracing real-time and DLSS, which means AI-assisted image scaling in games.

In an interview with Japanese 4Gamer, AMD CEO Adam Kozak says that the company’s upcoming graphics card Radeon VII will support DirectML, which is an addition to the DirectX graphics interface for machine learning. Among other things, like Nvidia’s DLSS technology, it can be used to scale up graphics in games and provide better image quality with less powerful hardware.

This is something Kozak also mentions in conversations with SweClockers during CES 2019, where he says that Nvidia has already shown that the technology can be used for these purposes with some success. Kozak says that AMD has already started experimenting with the technology and got good results.

Unlike DLSS, DirectML can be used on any hardware that supports DirectX 12, just like DirectX Raytracing. The technology is expected to be implemented in Windows 10 in connection with the Spring 2019 Update, but when it is supposed to be released is still unknown.
