AMD takes market share from Nvidia according to a new report

That Nvidia is the strongest in the market for graphics cards for desktops is nothing new. The company has in recent years picked up market shares from competitor AMD, and currently delivers almost 80 percent of all sold copies.

Now, however, there are signs of wind in the sails for the red team. According to a recent report from Mercury Research (PDF), AMD’s market shares will increase during the second quarter of the year, from 20.3 percent to 22.8 percent compared to the beginning of 2016. This means a level that is closer to the figure for the same period in 2015.

AMD’s average total share increased for the first time in more than four years. The last time the company experienced an increase was the first quarter of 2012. Both desktop and mobile shares were up
this quarter.

Interesting in this context is that the second quarter of the year ended with the month of June. This means that both the Geforce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 had some time in the spotlight, while the volume products GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 480 ended up outside.

Outside the realm of graphics cards for desktops, however, it is still Intel that rules. In terms of the total number of delivered graphics circuits, the processor giant accounts for as much as 71.5 percent during the second quarter of 2016, with Nvidia at 16.1 percent and AMD at 12.3 percent.
