Asrock builds an external graphics solution into the screen

As more and more ultraportable laptops are equipped with Intel’s high-speed interface Thunderbolt 3, interest has increased in external graphics boxes that can provide a lot of extra performance for, for example, gaming.

However, these drawers are not always completely neat, and therefore they can be difficult to place on the desk. This is something Asrock has identified as a problem and at CES 2020 they are showcasing a self-designed solution that is meant to take up space inside a monitor.

The principle is the same as the external graphics boxes, but instead the company has developed a Thunderbolt 3-connected circuit board that houses the graphics circuit, graphics memory and relevant ports. Together with a monitor manufacturer, the circuit board must then be integrated in a monitor solution together with some form of active cooling.

The model that Asrock is showing at the fair is based on the graphics card Radeon RX 570, and it is also probably the first variant that will be integrated into an actual screen. However, the company sees no major obstacle in using, for example, the Radeon RX 5500 for future models, while at the same time looking at integrating even higher-performing variants.

Asrock announces that the company is currently in negotiations with most screen manufacturers to integrate this type of solution, and that they expect to see products that use the concept sharply sometime in 2020.
