Call of Duty has lost 50 million players in a year

Call of Dutyone of the most popular game franchises in the industry, is not having a good time, and that is that during the earnings report for the first quarter of 2022, Activision revealed to its investors that although in 2021 they managed to reach 150 million active players per monththanks in large part to Call of Duty: Warzone, the franchise now moves in the 100 million active players per montha figure that is still impressive, but which reveals that they have lost a third of the players in just one year.

Specifically, from March 31, 2021 to June 30 of the same year, they went from 150 to 127 million of active players. On September 30 this figure fell to 119 millionon December 31 the figure continued to fall to 107 millionand on March 31 it closed with 100 million.

Taking advantage of the data offered, and to add context, in regards to Blizzardin the same period of time they went from 27 to 22 million active players per month.

The decline of Call of Duty: Warzone will come as no surprise to its players, as it’s been a disappointing year in terms of updates to the game, including boring seasonal additions, balance issues affecting gameplay, and a new map being released. released with game-breaking bugs that weren’t fixed for a good handful of weeks. To this must be added that Fortnite included a game mode without buildingwhich significantly increased the number of players to the point that this mode, which initially came for a limited time, remained a fixed option in the game.

Activision seems to be betting more and more on Infinity Ward, the fan-favorite Call of Duty developer. The studio is working in a Modern Warfare sequel which will arrive at the end of this year, in addition to leading a sequel to Warzone made from “scratch” with the new graphics engine that powers the next Modern Warfare, which would be announced this year, but would not arrive until 2023.
