Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced that public sector employees and retirees can benefit from a holiday airdrop. The population categories to which the measure is dedicated are employees from the public sector, the military and pensioners.

To receive 0.5 petro, they must create a crypto wallet on the official PetroApp platform.
This is the official wallet launched by the government in May this year.

PetroApp is designed to allow users to purchase goods and services on their phones, as well as for standard transfers. The wallet can also be used to convert petro into other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin and Dash.

Maduro said this airdrop is a way to encourage the use of state-based cryptocurrency. It was officially launched in October 2018, but with all the government’s advocacy efforts, the population has not enthusiastically adopted it.

Airdrop for $ 30 for holidays

0.5 petro is officially worth about $ 30, which is a significant amount considering that the national minimum wage is less than $ 10 per month.
In the same announcement, the president also said that over 500,000 petro will be provided from the state reserve.

This is the latest in a series of efforts to impose Petro adoption nationally. In September, Maduro ordered that the financing of a social housing initiative be paid to Petro. In the summer, he asked the Bank of Venezuela (BoV), one of the largest banks in the country, to make the token available to its customers. Despite a limited number of use cases, the government has paid petro state pensions for the past year.

Despite strong government support, adoption is still low. Currently, only 400 companies have decided to accept petro payments since November, according to a Government press release. In the same statement, Maduro ordered the companies to begin the integration of petro so that it could be used as the nation’s fiat currency, the sovereign bolivar.
