Decentralized social platforms – a new trend

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey revealed that he wants to create an open standard for decentralized social media platforms. The goal will be for Twitter to comply with that standard.

“Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a customer of this standard, “

of note Dorsey.

The technical director of Twitter, Parag Agrawal, will lead the decentralization team, which will be called Bluesky.

Dorsey pointed out some of the problems facing the current centralized social networking sites is the spread of false information. Also, many of these sites promote controversy instead of real conversations.

Instead, Dorsey pointed out that decentralization and other key technologies, such as blockchain, are a solution to these problems.

“Finally, new technologies have emerged to make a decentralized approach more viable. Blockchain indicates a number of decentralized solutions for open and sustainable hosting, governance and even monetization. Much work needs to be done, but the fundamentals are there, ”

he said.

Decentralized socialization platforms

The CEO of Twitter acknowledged that developing such a standard will be difficult and will take several years.
There are several ways in which Web3 technology, such as blockchain, could help solve problems with social networking sites. To begin with, centralized platforms have a lot of control over visible data, algorithms deciding what content is exposed. This type of system has been criticized for promoting one type of content over another, especially on Facebook and Google.

With decentralized social media platforms, there will be no central control to decide what content to publish. If the network used algorithms to sort the content, it would be publicly available. This would give all news equal opportunities to go viral.

In addition, there is the problem of personal data. On a decentralized social media platform there is the hope that each person will have complete control over their own data and decide who they want to offer them. This could prevent the monetization of personal data.

A decentralized version of Twitter has already been created, called Peepeth. It is built on the Ethereum blockchain, but has failed to attract large numbers of users.
