EVGA Geforce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 are suffering from heat problems

In connection with the launch of Nvidia’s latest generation Pascal, EVGA took the opportunity to release the new cooling solution ACX 3.0. Several reports from users now show that the company’s Geforce GTX 1080 FTW and GTX 1070 FTW are suffering from heat problems, which has manifested itself with everything from black screens to sparks and destroyed graphics cards.

The information about overheated EVGA graphics cards is strengthened by tests from the German edition of Tom’s Hardware, which show that the lack of thermal pads on the back means that the graphics cards are not able to keep the temperatures on the voltage part (VRM) down. The GDDR5X memory should also be well above acceptable levels – 107 degrees instead of the recommended 95 degrees.

During our recent testing, we have applied additional thermal pads between the backplate and the PCB and between the baseplate and the heatsink fins, with the results shown below. Also, we will work with Toms Hardware to do a retest.

A post from EVGA confirms the problem, which was verified internally after running its own tests in a controlled test environment with a room temperature of 30 degrees. The company therefore promises a solution for all users, regardless of whether they experience any real heat problems with their copies.

Users with one of the affected graphics cards can apply for a cover plate and heating pads on EVGA’s official website, a measure they are also considering for other EVGA graphics cards that are not included in the FTW series. It is not clear whether they will solve the overheating problems for the users who are not comfortable with mounting the cover plate themselves.
