GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards get very hot during mining and can fail

After the Bitcoin crash in 2018, many miners began to get rid of video cards. At that time, the most powerful was the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, which produced an outrageous hash rate for those times. Mining came to naught, and video cards were sold for a long time at relatively low prices, which made it possible for enthusiasts to buy the flagship at a discount.

In fact, everything is floded from whether the card has exhausted its resource or not. If the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti came across squeezed like a lemon, then it was impossible to call such an acquisition good. Today, the old flagship has been replaced by the RTX 3080, which is capable of generating over 80 MH / s. This is a good result, allowing, at the current rate, to recoup a model for $ 1000 in six months. Here are some interesting news just today, according to which the RTX 3080 may not live up to this moment.

The problem is that the temperature of some elements of the RTX 3080 goes up to 110 degrees. This information was obtained in the HWInfo64 program, which determined that the GDDR6X memory connection is hotter. If we compare games (for example, Metro Exodus), then in 4K resolution at maximum settings, the temperature does not rise above 102 degrees, but when mining Ether, the peak values go beyond 110 degrees.

According to experts, this situation raises concerns. The fact is that the game is not able to constantly load the video card. At some moments, the memory heats up, at others – the temperature decreases, but during the mining of cryptocurrency, maximum performance is required 24/7. By the way, after reaching certain temperatures, the card itself begins to reduce the clock frequency, switching to throttling mode.

Guys from Tomshardware tried several ways to lower the temperature by degrading the technical characteristics of the card itself. Unfortunately, even a drop by 500 MHz does not solve much, but the hash rate drops to critical values. NVIDIA previously stated that temperatures around 100 degrees are within acceptable limits. But, as we said, there is a big difference between the load in mining and in games. It is not yet clear what will happen to such video cards, and whether they will survive in this mode until their payback period. Experts speculate that such high temperatures could lead to premature failure.
