Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed the opinion that the threat to cryptocurrencies posed by a quantum computer developed by Google is too overrated.
“I believe that the superiority of a quantum computer is like a hydrogen bomb for nuclear fusion. The proof that it is possible to extract energy from it is still far from real use, ” wrote Buterin on the social network Twitter.
Earlier, a similar point of view was expressed by cryptocurrency enthusiast Andreas Antonopoulos:
“How does this affect mining and cryptocurrencies in general? If we talk about the quantum computer Google, then it solves some problems of certain types. And these types of problems generally do not correspond to the tasks of cryptography, ”said Antonopoulos.
In addition, in September, cryptographer and Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd expressed the view that a quantum computer does not threaten the cryptography algorithms on which Bitcoin is based.
