Graphics cards are becoming more expensive again

Luck and a large wallet have been the keywords for buying graphics cards in the past year. The soon-to-be-old enthusiasm for the powerful new AMD Radeon RX 6000 and Nvidia Geforce RTX 3000 series has in many cases been replaced by dissatisfied enthusiasts, but at the beginning of the summer there was a glimmer of light. The sky-high prices showed a downward trend, Chinese cryptocurrencies were sold second-hand and even in Sweden some cards remained on store shelves for several days.

Now the wind has turned, the shelves are empty again and figures from Chinese Mydrivers and German 3Dcenter show that prices are also starting to pick up again. The former deals specifically with the Chinese market and reports that Geforce RTX 3000 graphics circuits will be more difficult to access in September. Compared with August, the supply will fall by more than 30 percent, where RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti will be at least 50 percent less in accordance with previous information.

This makes an impression on the price and the Asus-signed Geforce RTX 3070 Ti takes the crown with an observed September increase of 600 yuan, which corresponds to approximately SEK 800. Asus variants of RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 see price increases of the equivalent of SEK 400-500, SEK 300-400 applies to simpler RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 2060, with older GTX 1600 and GTX 1000 cards up a couple of hundred bucks. Gigabyte graphics cards are also experiencing similar price changes in the Chinese market, while MSI cards are almost completely gone.

In a line diagram, 3Dcenter summarizes the development by comparing the graphics cards’ target price with sales price. Included in the calculation are the average best German prices for the four top cards in AMD’s series Radeon RX 6000, as well as the five sharpest in Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series. On August 8, AMD cards were on average 59 percent more expensive than the target price and Nvidia’s 50 percent. Now this has increased to 64 and 59 percent, respectively, which translates to just over 3 and exactly 6 percent. It can be added, however, that these are pure figures of joy set against a multiple target price that was seen in May.
