How to ‘Increase/ Max/ Optimize/ Tune/ Boost’ Hashrate Bitmain Antminer S9 Mining :Overclocking| Hashrate 21 Th/s./ Best Settings/ Is it Good for Mining? – Bitmain Antminer S9 is almost a legendary device that combines an extremely democratic price (which allows everyone to try their hand at mining) with pretty good characteristics.
Of course, in terms of energy efficiency, it is inferior to the top S17 – but for the same money you can buy several miners, which will improve the overall result, and most importantly, make a profit faster. To date, S9 has undergone many changes, and in the last year, Bitmain and then Crazymining released a fresh firmware on it with the connection of the Asic boost function.
What is this Asic Boost and why should I flash an already stable machine for the sake of it. It’s worth starting with the fact that this is an internal software solution provided by Bitmain itself – and it consists solely in optimizing the mining algorithm. Crazy mining went further and combined the standard Asic boost with its downvolting functions with overclocking of the ASIC operating frequencies, making it several times faster. Peak hashrate can reach 21 Th/s. Moreover, the base power consumption during such intensive mining has decreased by 200W, which increases its efficiency by almost 30% in relation to the old Bitmain firmware for Antminer S9.

A few weeks ago, Bitcoin Core developer James Hilliard discovered a vulnerability in the firmware of the Antminer S15 ASIC miner manufactured by the Chinese company Bitmain. Twitter user 00whiterabbit subsequently created an exploit based on Hilliard’s findings, and Hilliard posted a video showing the bug working. Bitcoin Magazine writes about it.
Hilliard is willing to provide Bitmain with information about the vulnerability, but only if it complies with the popular GNU open source license, which the company is currently violating.
“Bitmain firmware is pretty buggy in general, ” Hilliard said.
It is important to the health of the Bitcoin network that Bitmain has the ability to fix these bugs.”
Hilliard, best known as the author of the BIP 91 bitcoin improvement proposal used to activate SegWit, discovered the vulnerability while examining a firmware update file on the Bitmain support site. He claims that the bug can affect not only the latest firmware version of the most powerful Bitmain miner for bitcoin mining on the SHA256 algorithm, but also other versions of the software.
“With a high degree of confidence, I can say that there are other vulnerabilities in this firmware. It is very poorly developed in terms of security ,” he added.
The described vulnerability allows you to get root access to the device. In theory, all the necessary operations can be carried out even remotely, knowing only the IP address of the miner, and then reprogramming it to set the settings the hacker needs.
For example, with its help, you can change the address of the bitcoin wallet to which the cryptocurrency is sent, completely stop mining, or install your own firmware.
In practice, however, an attacker is unlikely to find an unprotected miner. To protect themselves, users just need to properly configure the firewall or use a strong password. In addition, in order to create individual firmware, an attacker will need to gain access to the code of the original software.
“The more serious problem is that the Bitmain firmware as a whole contains a lot of bugs ,” Hilliard explained.
So, at the beginning of 2020, an anonymous cybersecurity expert discovered a vulnerability, which later became known as Antbleed and allowed to remotely disable Antminer devices. The problem affected not only the owners of the miners themselves, but also the bitcoin network as a whole, since it could lose half of its computing power overnight.
“Bitmain should, by right, open source its firmware,” Hilliard said, noting that the company’s software is based on its self-developed cgminer program, which supports an open source policy. “But Bitmain doesn’t seem to care about copyright. Unfortunately, closed-source firmware has a negative impact on the bitcoin network, as something similar to Antbleed may be hiding in it. This is one of the risks of centralization.”
The reason why Bitmain refuses to disclose the code of its software and violates the principles of GNU is not entirely obvious. Hilliard suggests that the company does not want users to set up the hardware themselves, depriving it of a possible source of income. Others assume that in this way Bitmain protects its devices from intruders who may try to find vulnerabilities in them for selfish reasons.
Hilliard, however, does not lose hope that the situation can change:
“In the past, they have published code that looked like the real thing, presumably due to public pressure. Maybe it will work now?”

2. Firmware installation and overclocking

2.6 After downloading the miner, you need to go to “MINER CONFIGURATION” and click “SAVE” to apply the settings of the new firmware.

1. Download the cm_2.0 firmware update file:

2. Go to the web interface of the miner, section System -> Upgrade, remove Keep Settings (do not save settings), select the downloaded firmware file (tar.gz), click Flash Image, wait for the update process to complete and reboot the miner
3. Leave only the ip address of the miner in the browser line, press Enter, then Ctrl-F5, go to the Miner Configuration menu and click Save (save the settings of the new firmware), select the desired mode in the Miner Profiles section, make the rest of the settings. 4. Your ASIC now has the latest Crazy Mining firmware installed. After applying the settings, the ASIC will reach the optimal mode of operation within 1-1.5 hours, while its spontaneous reboots are acceptable. If reboots continue after that, you need to check the temperature of the hash boards and chips, reduce the frequency and voltage. Critical (harmful) chip temperatures: T9+ – 90C, S9 – 135C, S9i – 85C, S9j – 95C.

Troubleshooting methods (by situation and complexity)

9. Now you can insert the MicroSD card into the control board slot and connect the board to power. Make sure the card is inserted correctly – on some MicroSD control boards, the slot may be upside down.
10. Wait for the red and green LEDs next to the Ethernet port to blink continuously. This will happen in about 60 seconds and will mean that the board can be disconnected from the power – the firmware via MicroSD is completed.

11. Your control board is completely cleaned of old firmware and settings, it has the latest Crazy Mining firmware installed.
12. Return to step 3 “Flash via web interface” to set up the ASIC and allow it to reach the optimal mode of operation. It is to point 3 – you don’t need to flash anything else, with MicroSD you have already installed the latest firmware version.
