The bitcoin entry follows the trial of Clifton Collins, convicted of drug traffic, reports local media Independent.
The court found that the crypto-currencies were "the product" of the illegal activities of the 49-year-old Irishman from Dublin.
The Criminal Assets Bureau thus obtained the order to freeze its bitcoins to make sure he couldn’t remove them without the judge’s approval.
In February 2017, Collins was arrested driving a 4X4 vehicle with a certain amount of cannabis. Following an investigation, the authorities discovered a very large number of hemp plantations at his home. They are then traced back to its crypto-wallets containing thousands of bitcoins (total value of 52 million euros, or almost 5,600 BTC at current prices).
Collins would have invested at an early stage in Bitcoin, says the Irish media. The trafficker did not contest the court’s request.
