Memory problems with Geforce GTX 1070 are fixed with BIOS update

Earlier this month, it was reported that some copies of Nvidia’s Geforce GTX 1070 graphics card were being pulled with problems. The concerns are related to the graphics card memory, specifically circuits made by Micron. The result is instability and crashes, something reported by several users. The behavior has been detected during overclocking of the memory, but also during everyday use without modified frequencies.

The problem is apparently not due to a fault in the hardware, but instead has to do with the graphics card’s BIOS and how this applies voltage to the memory circuits. The concerns have also been brought to the attention of Nvidia themselves and several partner manufacturers, who are now releasing updated BIOS versions. The update is believed to raise the voltage level and thus only affects Geforce GTX 1070 cards with GDDR5 memory from Micron.

So far, EVGA, Palit and Gainward have rolled out updated BIOSs for their graphics cards, and several others are expected to follow soon. Manufacturers MSI and Gigabyte announce that their new BIOS versions will be released sometime this week, while Asus is still working on theirs.

The latest BIOS updates are available for download via EVGA, Palits and Gainward websites.

Updated: Asus announces that their BIOS update will be released on November 4, which improves memory overclocking and introduces semi-passive cooling for Geforce GTX 1070 Dual cards from the company.
