Nordic leaders to discuss substitution of energy sources from Russia

HELSINKI, Aug 30 – PRIME. The heads of government of the Nordic and Baltic countries will discuss on Tuesday on the Danish island of Bornholm ways to quickly replace Russian fossil energy sources, especially renewable sources, the Finnish Cabinet reports.

Finland will be represented by Prime Minister Sanna Marin, the meeting will be held at the initiative of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

“The leaders of the countries of the Baltic Sea region will discuss ways to quickly replace Russian fossil energy, especially renewable energy. They will focus on increasing the capacity of wind power, building energy transmission lines and stepping up cooperation to strengthen the energy security of the Baltic Sea region. Energy issues will be included in the agenda of the meetings of the European Council autumn,” the statement said.

The Danish Prime Minister also invited the leaders of Germany and Poland, the President of the European Commission and energy ministers of the participating countries to the meeting, the report says.

After the start of a special military operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine, the West stepped up sanctions pressure on Russia, which led to an increase in electricity, fuel and food prices in Europe and the United States. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy for the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
