Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 and GTX 970

For those who have not kept up with the twists and turns around Nvidia’s introduction of the new architecture Maxwell, it may be time for a little look back. At the beginning of this year, the mid-range Geforce GTX 750 and 750 Ti were released with the new graphics processor GM107, which gave a pretty good indication of the future of the Geforce series. Since then, Kepler’s successor has been silent, but now it’s time for the new architecture to take the step to the performance class.

The new Geforce GTX 970 and GTX 980 in practice replace the current Geforce GTX 780 and GTX 780 Ti respectively. That there will be no 800 series is explained by the fact that Nvidia wants to gather the entire generation of Maxwell, that is, both circuits for desktops and laptops, in a common number series – a decision that already seems to cause some confusion.

At the center is the GM204 graphics processor and not entirely unexpectedly, it’s a lot about performance. This time, however, there will be a greater focus on energy consumption. Nvidia claims that the new circuit is the world’s most advanced graphics processor and also the most efficient design of all time. Said and done – SweClockers loads the test benches with Geforce GTX 980 and GTX 970!
