Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 gets new graphics circuit – will kill mining performance

There is an unprecedented shortage of graphics cards and recently none other than Nvidia admitted that the situation will continue throughout 2021. In addition to general shortage worldwide, higher demand than usual among enthusiasts is believed to be behind the shortage, but also that players who break cryptocurrencies, mining, swallows a not entirely insignificant proportion of graphics cards that find their way onto the market.

To ease the pressure, Nvidia has launched a new series of graphics cards called Cryptocurrency Mining Processor (CMP), but also through new drivers tried to stifle the performance of crypto mining on Geforce RTX 3060. The latter measure fell flat when Nvidia themselves happened to leak a driver that lifted the constraint.

Chinese HKEPC is now reporting that a more ambitious hardware-level restriction is on the way. The website refers to sources from Taiwanese graphics card manufacturers, who claim that Nvidia has developed a new variant of the graphics circuit GA106 for Geforce RTX 3060. The circuit used today is called GA106-300 and the new one is said to be named GA106-302.

In terms of specifications, nothing should differ between the graphics circuits, but the difference is exclusively that the new Geforce RTX 3060 that comes with GA106-302 gets a new PCI Device ID. The maneuver gives Nvidia the ability to completely break compatibility with older drivers and thus limit the graphics card to newer software with performance limitation for breaking cryptocurrencies.

So far, Nvidia itself has only talked about limiting the performance of the Geforce RTX 3060 as a direct measure to make the graphics card less attractive to miners. The reputable Twitter leaker @ kopite7kimi writes that it may be relevant with new variants of GA102, which is used in Geforce RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, and GA104, which is housed in RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti.

Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 with the graphics circuit GA106-302 is expected to be available in stores during the month of May.
