While the Geforce GTX 680 occupies the top class, Nvidia is filing on more models with the Kepler architecture. Now there is talk of the slimmed-down graphics processor GK106 which is said to appear in at least one model in the upcoming Geforce GTX 660 series.
According to the German 3Dcenter, the GK106 is a graphics processor manufactured in 28 nanometers with 768 CUDA cores, half as many as in the GK104 (Geforce GTX 680). There are 64 texture units, 24 ROPs and 192-bit memory bus with 1.5 or 2.0 GB GDDR5 memory. More details are support for PCI Express 3.0 and a TDP value of about 130 W.
The same source states that the performance may end up at about the same level as the Geforce GTX 560 Ti and Radeon HD 6950. With the right pricing, the new mid-range can thus also challenge the Radeon HD 7800 series. The launch is said to take place sometime in May.
