A few months ago, Nvidia blocked the possibility of overclocking the mobile Geforce GTX 900M series via the drivers, but got back after tough criticism from users. Yesterday it was clear that the restriction, which is somewhat jokingly called “clock-block” by critics, has returned.
We have replicated this issue and are fixing this in an upcoming driver for next week. We’ll be sure and let you know when this gets posted. Sorry for the inconvenience.
This time, however, Nvidia did not let the critics wait long, but backed away from the limitation. In a statement, Nvidia’s PR manager, Bryan Del Rizzo, said that the reintroduction was a mistake and that they recreated the “problem” internally. As a result, new drivers are promised next week, but it is already possible to download a so-called hotfix for Geforce Drivers 350.12 and 352.86 which lifts the barrier.
The process of overclocking laptops was often associated with folly in the past. In recent years, however, it has become something of a selling point for manufacturers, combining energy-efficient mobile processors and graphics cards with advanced cooling solutions that stand in the way of possible frequency increases.
