Nvidia sells two Geforce MX250s – one variant is significantly slower

Launching different variations of a graphics card with the same name has occurred for several years, both from AMD and Nvidia. The former with, among others, RX 560 and Nvidia with Geforce MX 150 for laptops. However, it is not always clear which variant applies, something that can be misleading.

Now Notebookcheck reports that Nvidia is making a repeat favorite with the Geforce MX 250. Namely, there are two variants of the graphics card, and if the situation with the MX150 is repeated, the performance difference should be around 30 percent. Already now, several computer manufacturers have chosen not to specify which variant of MX250 is used.

Like its predecessor, one MX250 comes with 10 W TDP and the other with 25 W TDP. The former has device ID “1D52” and the faster 25 W gets ID “1D13”. The difference is believed to lie primarily in the clock frequencies, but so far all Notebookcheck models have been able to use the faster 25 W variant.

It remains to be seen how big the difference in performance will be in practice, and whether more manufacturers will choose to reveal which version is used. Until then, it is recommended to keep an extra eye when buying a laptop to make sure that the correct components are used.

What do you think about the fact that graphics card manufacturers are not always so clear with the naming? Discuss in the comments field!
