Programmable Blockchain Solid State Drive and Switch from Samsung

Samsung seems ready for a new step in the crypto industry, this time in cryptocurrency mining. The company filed a patent in May for a chip called “Programmable Blockchain Solid State Drive and Switch.”

This programmable data storage device consists of a non-volatile memory and a storage controller that is configured to control the system. It has a network interface and can implement a blockchain algorithm. Basically, this new system would have the efficiency of an ASIC, combined with the flexibility of a GPU.

Programmable Blockchain Solid State Drive and Switch is not the only cryptocurrency mining product manufactured by Samsung. Since 2018, the company has begun producing high-performance Bitcoin mining chips, with a new model called 7LPP recently launched.

Applicable technology

Samsung says that 7LPP will enable the development of other emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, 5G network, automotive, as well as enterprise data center technology and large scale.

Samsung also entered into a strategic partnership with MicroBT – the third largest Bitcoin manufacturer ASIC. The latest MicroBT device, the M20S WhatsMiner, has a capacity of 68 TH / s and an energy efficiency of 48W / TH.

By comparison, the Bitmain Antminer S9 reaches 13.5 Th / s with an energy efficiency of 98W / TH. This means that Samsung chips are five times stronger than those used by Bitmain.

In addition to the famous Galaxy S10 phone with crypto storage capabilities, Samsung has confirmed that it is developing its own blockchain network based on the Ethereum platform. This will include a native token called Samsung Coin.
