We proceeded to overclock the card, and the only thing we managed to do was to increase the working frequency of the video memory to the maximum, which in our case was 9 GHz (the card could produce a frequency more, but the overclocking software or the driver have limitations, and 9 GHz is the maximum). With video memory running at 9 Ghz, the RX 480 card gives about 28 MHS of hashing power for Ethereum mining.

It is possible that the hashing power may be even higher if we manage to overcome the 9 GHz limit for video memory. However, at the moment neither AMD’s WattMan program, nor Asus tools allow us to do this. With overclocking, the power consumption increases by about 7-8 watts, but such overclocking is definitely worth doing when mining Ethereum.

We were a little disappointed by the lack of overclocking of the GPU, which has a voltage margin to reach 1340 MHz. Of course, such overclocking does not matter for Ethereum mining , and in fact, if you want to mine only Ethereum, the clock frequency of the graphics processor should be even slightly reduced. Also, we were not too happy with the way the cooling and heat removal from the RX 480 was built here. AMD set the fan rotation speed so that the map remained quiet and very hot, which is not quite suitable for mining.

It seemed to us that the best solution would be to set the fan blade speed to 80%, which would give us moderate temperatures and a not too noisy map. A good choice if mining noise is a problem for you. By setting the fan blade speed to 80%, you can expect about 72 degrees Celsius on the GPU, which is not very good if your mining will be around the clock. Increasing the fan load to 100% significantly increases the noise level, and reduces the temperature on the processor to 68 degrees Celsius, that is, not much.
