“Radeon RX 6000 for laptops launched this summer”

When the annual electronics trade show CES 2021 kicked off and set the tone for the rest of the year, AMD unveiled the Ryzen 5000 processor series “Cezanne” for laptops. On the periphery, CEO Lisa Su also announced that the Radeon RX 6000 series of graphics cards would make their entrance into laptops during the first half of the year.

We […] are on track for the first notebooks featuring our leading-edge mobile RDNA 2 architecture to launch later this quarter. – Lisa Su, VD på AMD

In connection with this year’s first quarter report, Lisa Su announces that the Radeon RX 6000 will be released for laptops during the second quarter of the year. This is not entirely unexpected, as companies when they talk about half of the year normally refer to the latter part of the period. The launch will probably take place during the annual electronics fair Computex, where the 2021 edition will be launched on 1 June.

AMD has not yet released any details about the mobile Radeon RX 6000 series. Rumor has it that the top models are based on the graphics circuit Navi 22, which is used in the Radeon RX 6700 XT, which in full-featured version has 2,560 stream processors and a 192-bit memory bus. The latter means that a flagship is likely to get 12 GB of GDDR6 memory with an effective clock frequency of 14,000 MHz, for a theoretical bandwidth of 336 GB / s. The flagship is believed to be called RX 6800M.

Further down the hierarchy, AMD is expected to use the not yet launched graphics circuits Navi 23 and Navi 24 with fewer stream processors, narrower memory buses and as part of this also lower power consumption. Whether these will also be launched by the end of the second quarter of the year is not yet known, but all indications are that AMD is planning new graphics cards for laptops in all price ranges.
