Razer releases graphics card dock Core X Chroma with 700 W power supply

Laptops often come with clocked models of graphics cards used on the desktop side. In the lavish Ultrabook segment, it is also integrated graphics circuits that usually apply, which do not go very far when it comes to gaming. Therefore, the idea of graphics card dolls was born.

The concept is that the laptop’s memory and processor are used, while heavy graphics calculations instead take place in a separate dock containing a lavishly dedicated graphics card. Now the Razer graphics card dock Core X Chroma unveils, where the highlights are spelled RGB lighting, 700 watt power supplies and Thunderbolt 3.

In terms of graphics cards, there is support for large graphics cards that take up three expansion slots and are up to 33 cm long and 16 cm high. The power consumption must not exceed 500 watts, which means support for basically all graphics cards. For cooling, there is a pre-assembled 120 mm fan and perforated side panels.

Core X Chroma is a 6.9 kg heavy aluminum construction that measures 37.4 × 16.8 × 23 cm, which means that the doll is larger than some full-scale chassis in the style of the Swedish Louqe Ghost S1. The advantage of the doll, however, is that it does not require a whole new computer, but one and the same laptop can be used.

In terms of connections, there are four full-size USB 3.1, while the connection between computer and dock is via Thunderbolt 3. Via this connector, the dock can also provide the computer with up to 100 watts of power supply. Finally, there is an Ethernet port of 1 Gbit / s if the laptop does not have a physical connection.

In terms of compatibility, a computer with Windows 10 64-bit is required, which provides support for most modern graphics cards. For MacOS, on the other hand, support is limited to AMD graphics cards, and support for the Razer Synapse software that controls the RGB lighting is ironed out.

Razer Core X Chroma is available for purchase already now at a recommended price of 449 euros, corresponding to around 4,700 kronor.
