The media warned the Swiss about the increase in electricity tariffs up to 60%

GENEVA, 1 Sat — PRIME. Depending on the providers, the cost of electricity for households will rise by up to 60% in all of French-speaking Switzerland in 2023, the Swiss broadcaster RTS said on its website.

The journalists explained that the increase in utility tariffs arises for two reasons: an increase in the costs of using the Swissgrid network (operating the Swiss electricity transmission network – ed.), on the one hand, but, above all, a sharp increase in energy prices in the markets, the reasons for which are numerous: failure of French nuclear power plants, shortage of gas and even drought.

“The differences can be significant between the nearly 600 Swiss suppliers. For example, BKW customers are unlikely to pay a few extra francs in 2023 compared to 2022,” they added.

The risk of power shortages is considered one of the highest in Switzerland. Earlier, the head of the Swiss Federal Commission for Electricity ElCom, Werner Luginbühl, urged citizens to stock up on candles and firewood due to possible power outages in the coming winter.

The country’s authorities have previously said that for the first time they can impose restrictions on energy consumption in the event of a shortage of electricity or gas.
