Trinity Wallet wallet was attacked by MoonPay

The IOTA Foundation announced that it has reactivated the coordinating node that allows transactions, which has been suspended for three weeks. The decision to suspend transactions was made after the Trinity Wallet wallet was compromised on February 12.

The ability to conduct transactions was blocked on the same day to prevent further security breaches. However, 8.55 million MIOTA were stolen from 50 users, having a negative impact on the IOTA price.

In a blog post published on March 10, the IOTA Foundation announced that the node that approves all transactions (known as the coordinator) has been reactivated. During the suspension period, Trinity wallet users were urged to migrate their wallets using a specially designed tool.

Trinity Wallet wallet was attacked by MoonPay

For users of the desktop version of the Trinity wallet, it has been found to be vulnerable after hackers were able to access private keys. The cause of this attack was attributed to the MoonPay service, which allowed users to purchase IOTA tokens directly.

The official posting mentions that the foundation is making efforts to recover the stolen funds and continues the investigation of the incident:

“We are continuing to work with the FBI, as well as with the British, German and Maltese police to identify and track down the attacker. With the restart of the coordinator, we monitor the suspicious activities together ”.

The Foundation also presented plans to reduce possible incidents:

“The IOTA Foundation reviews its internal processes, with planned changes regarding software security practices. Improvements in our security capabilities and resources and extension of our efforts in education and best practices for any software that manages user accounts in the IOTA network. ”
