Wintershall Dea and HES Wilhelmshaven to establish CO2 hub in Germany

MOSCOW, 18 Oct – PRIME. Germany’s Wintershall Dea and HES Wilhelmshaven Tank Terminal have signed an agreement to develop a CO2 hub at the HES tank terminal in Wilhelmshaven in northwest Germany, Wintershall Dea said in a press release.

Wintershall Dea and HES Wilhelmshaven Tank Terminal have signed an agreement to jointly develop CO2nnectNow, a CO2 hub at the HES Wilhelmshaven Tank Terminal.

CO2, which cannot be avoided in the industrial process, will be captured at industrial sites in Germany and transported to the planned CO2nectNow concentrator, explains Wintershall Dea. From there, the CO2 will be transported by pipeline from Germany’s only deep water port to geological formations in the Norwegian and Danish North Seas for permanent and safe storage.

This process is called carbon capture and storage (CCS). It will be key to the decarbonization of industries in Germany, the release notes. The company plans that CO2nnectNow will play a critical role in achieving this goal if, from 2028, more than 10 million tons of CO2 per year are exported from Wilhelmshaven for safe storage.

Wintershall Dea is Europe’s largest private oil and gas company. Operates in Northern Europe, Russia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa. It was formed in 2019 as a result of the merger of the oil and gas assets of the German BASF and LetterOne of the Russian businessman Mikhail Fridman. The share of BASF is 72.7%, and LetterOne – 27.3%.
