Unlike Hedera Hashgraph, the Alliance MRO Blockchain is not yet a blockchain consortium in the aeronautical industry. It could eventually become so. For the moment, it is a grouping of industrialists in the sector around the uses of blockchain for the logistics of the detached pieces of the had.
This alliance brings together specialized companies such as Cathay Pacific, FLYdocs, SITA, Ramco Systems, Willis Lease or the French Bolloré Logistics. The governance of the group will be provided by Sita, software publisher for air transport.
It is the latter who will oversee the compliance of the solutions developed within MRO Blockchain and their validation by international regulatory authorities and standardization bodies.
The partners' desire is in fact at first to "define a global standard for applying blockchain technology enabling tracking, tracing and recording of aircraft spare parts. "
SITA thus considers that the blockchain will contribute to a better information sharing and recording, securely, between players in air transport, in particular with regard to MRO operations (maintenance, repair and overhaul).
The establishment of the MRO Alliance should therefore facilitate and accelerate the tracking of parts through the blockchain. The experiment aims to share data between different players in the sector and to keep a common history.
Each year, the MRO industry processes 25 billion pieces, while adding three billion new pieces. There are 20,000 suppliers, covering 144,000 flights a day for a global industry market worth around $ 100 billion each year, says Sita.
The blockchain offers unprecedented possibilities for sharing critical data between several stakeholders in a secure manner. There are many potential applications of these possibilities in the supply chain, ”comments Cyrille-Ange Roux Luzi, Regional Director for Asia-Pacific Aerospace at Bolloré Logistics.
Alliance members are giving themselves several months to develop a first blockchain product intended to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the selected use case. Thus, for each piece, two information sections will be recorded and monitored: a digital thread and a digital passport.
The thread will provide real-time information on the status of the part and its chain of custody, ensuring traceability over time. As for the digital passport, it must allow "unquestionable identification" of a document. It will include for this various data necessary to attest to its ownership, such as the certificate of airworthiness.
