AMD Freesync still without drivers

Yesterday, AMD launched the Freesync technology, an open standard for dynamic refresh rates with Radeon series graphics cards and a direct challenger to competing Nvidia G-Sync. However, despite the promise to release the associated drivers on March 19, there is still no official software available.

December’s Catalyst Omega is still AMD’s latest driver.

We want the Catalyst Beta driver with AMD FreeSync technology to be the highest quality as possible and are working hard to get it posted. Stayed tuned for further updates.

To SweClockers, AMD states that the reason for the delay is that the drivers are not yet considered ready for end users. However, the company’s Nordic representative points out that at the time of writing it is morning in Canada, where AMD’s developers are housed. There is thus still a chance that the software will be ready before the weekend.

The lack of new drivers does not only affect those who have had time to get their hands on a Freesync-compatible screen. The latest version of Catalyst was released as long ago as December 9, which means that Radeon owners and especially users with multiple graphics cards in Crossfire have not had access to any new optimizations in a full three months.

In addition, Freesync does not work with Crossfire configurations. This will be activated first with a later driver, which is expected to arrive sometime in April.

Update: AMD releases beta-stamped driver with Freesync support. The software is called Catalyst 15.3 Beta (14.502.1014) and can be downloaded from the company’s website.
