AMD’s drivers suggest that the Radeon R9 370 is based on three-year-old Pitcairn

The rumor mill is in full swing ahead of AMD’s launch of the Radeon 300 series. Last week, what are said to be complete specifications for the flagship R9 390X with the Fiji graphics processor and stacked HBM-type memory leaked. Although much is known about the upcoming top model, more question marks than answers remain further down the hierarchy, not least in the best-selling middle segment.

In early March, what are said to be documents from XFX leaked online. These show overall details of the Radeon R9 370 with the Trinidad graphics processor, which is expected to replace the three-year-old Pitcairn / Curacao in the Radeon HD 7800 and Radeon R9 270 series. Now it appears that Trinidad may not be what it is said to be at all.

Before the weekend, AMD released the Freesync-specific driver Catalyst 15.3, where the company took the opportunity to expand the graphics card support with the Radeon R9 370. Interestingly, it has a similar Device ID as the Radeon R9 270 series, which means that it is not at all about Trinidad without Pitcairn / Curacao. At the same time, it is speculated that it is about a placeholder, something enthusiasts claim is strengthened by recent rumors about Trinidad.

Provided the data is correct, the Radeon R9 370 will stand out from the many features added since the introduction of the Radeon HD 7000 series in late 2011. Among these are Crossfire without cables (XDMA), better support for Mantle, Trueaudio, refined turbo technology from Hawaii and dynamic refresh rates with newly launched Freesync.

The AMD Radeon 300 series is expected to appear in the summer months, probably in connection with the electronics trade fair Computex. However, the new addition to the drivers suggests that the Radeon R9 370 may appear as early as this spring.
