AMD launches Firepro W9100 with “Hawaii” and 16 GB GDDR5

Full HD resolution has long been commonplace in the tech world, but that is starting to change. The proliferation of 4K resolution worldwide and massive 8K in Japan are driving the demand for more computing power forward. To meet the market and against the Nvidia Quadro K6000, AMD launches the Firepro W9100.

The company’s crown jewel for 2014 houses the full-scale graphics circuit Hawaii XT with 2,816 stream processors in 950 MHz, for a computing power of 5.35 TFLOPS at single precision. The parade number is the performance in double-precision calculations of 2.67 TFLOPS, which is around 50 percent higher than Nvidia’s ditto. This includes no less than 16 GB of GDDR5 memory.

In addition to high theoretical values, the graphics card is equipped with six Mini Displayports with the ability to operate up to six screens in 4K resolution or two screens in 8K. This is also compared to the Nvidia Quadro K6000, which only has the ability to drive around two 4K screens.

AMD has also worked on developing a complete turnkey solution based on the new graphics card. The computer is called a Visual Supercomputer and can be equipped with up to two Intel Xeon E5 v2 processors (Ivy Bridge-E) with eight cores each, between 32-256 GB DDR3 memory and finally up to four Firepro W9100. The latter provides the ability to operate up to 24 4K screens or eight in 8K.

It will not be clear when the AMD Firepro W9100 and Visual Supercomputer will become available.
