AMD Radeon R9 Nano with Fiji graphics processor draws 175 watts

In exactly one week, AMD will launch the Radeon R9 Fury X, which takes up the fight against Nvidia’s Geforce GTX 980 Ti. In addition to the transition to the HBM memory technology, the biggest news is that AMD is running a water cooler for reference design, something that has contributed to enabling its short length.

However, the illusion that closed water cooling would be a requirement for the Fiji graphics processor in a compact design shattered AMD during yesterday’s PC Gaming Show, where the air-cooled minimum Radeon R9 Nano with a length of a meager six inches (15.24 cm) was presented.

Being a little crab is not the only thing that makes the Radeon R9 Nano special. The company’s CEO also revealed that it will be up to twice as energy efficient as the R9 290X, compared to the R9 Fury X which is “only” 50 percent better in this respect. At the same time, more performance was promised in addition to the higher energy efficiency.

More details are now being published about the Radeon R9 Nano’s power consumption, which is said to be 175 W at load and whose power supply is via an 8-pin PCI Express. This is comparable to the Geforce GTX 760, which with a TDP value of 170 W has been a popular Mini ITX alternative.

No details about other specifications are available, but it is no big deal that this card will also be limited to 4 GB of video memory. It is also likely that this is to some extent a stripped-down variant of the Fiji graphics processor, where, above all, lower clock frequencies should be conducive to achieving the lower power.

The AMD Radeon R9 Nano will be launched in late summer, probably in August. What the price will land on is not yet known.
