Following the controversy over memory management in the Geforce GTX 970, AMD is taking the opportunity to rub salt in the wounds and push the rival Nvidia, including triumphant posts on Twitter. Now it looks like AMD is planning to go from word to deed and scale back a few hundred bucks for the price-closest competitor in the Radeon series.
At the American retailer Newegg, among others, the Radeon R9 290X is available for as little as 300 dollars after a discount, corresponding to approximately 3,100 kronor including VAT. At the time of writing, many Swedish retailers charge around SEK 3,300 for the cheapest models, but it is possible to find one or two campaigns with graphics cards at the three thousand kronor mark.
The flagship Radeon R9 290X was released in October 2013 and contains the full version of the Hawaii circuit with 2,816 computing units and 4 GB of GDDR5 memory on a 512-bit memory bus. Thanks to the new Catalyst Omega driver, the graphics card performs in many cases better than the Geforce GTX 970, which is found at roughly the same price point.
