AMD Navi is seen in the driver for Linux

In early summer 2017, AMD introduced the Vega graphics architecture, which was first released to professional users and then to consumers in the form of the Radeon RX Vega 56 and RX Vega 64. The successor to this is expected to be Navi, which takes the step to manufacturing at 7 nanometers.

A user on the Beyond3D forum has now discovered references to the upcoming Navi in a new driver for Linux. The change log mentions “new_chip.gfx10.mmSUPER_SECRET.enable [0: 0]“, where” gfx10 “is believed to be the code name for Navi as Vega had the code name” gfx9 “.

AMD itself has not yet released details about Navi, but previous information suggests, among other things, that it is equipped with circuits that are specially adapted for machine learning and artificial intelligence. This would allow the company to compete with Nvidia’s Volta architecture and its Tensor cores used for the same purpose.

The company has also said that the architecture may support the next generation of graphics memory, which is believed to mean HBM3 and GDDR6. When Navi will be released is also unknown, but there has previously been talk of a launch for the summer of 2018.
