AMD promises graphics cards to “as many gamers as possible” during the first quarter

The lack of graphics cards of the latest cuts from both AMD and Nvidia amounts to almost biblical proportions, where consumers spent over four months waiting for a graphics card launched in the fall of 2020. While Nvidia never promised gold and green forests in the form of graphics cards to everyone it was something AMD did with the RDNA 2-based series Radeon RX 6000.

The Radeon RX 6800 series was expected by consumers to follow in the same footsteps, where a winged exchange of words on Twitter resulted in AMD’s marketing manager Frank Azor apparently investing $ 10 in the launch not to get off on paper alone. Enthusiasts were instead disappointed at launch when the supply was counted in single copies, also at noticeably higher prices than promised – while Azor himself continued to sprinkle salt on the wounds by claiming that he managed to buy a card from AMD’s own store.

Now AMD is giving the impression of being aware of the asset problem and working to solve it. In an interview with Babeltechreviews, AMD’s Ritchie Corpus talks about the demand for the company’s RDNA 2-based graphics cards in reference design and that more cards may be on their way to the market.

Based on the response to our AMD Radeon RX 6800 Series and Radeon RX 6900 XT reference design graphics cards, we are extending production to make them available to as many gamers as possible on AMD.com at SEP. Additional reference cards are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2021. We will also continue supporting our partners in the development of their custom AMD Radeon™ RX 6000 Series graphics card designs. – Ritche Corpus, AMD

This goes against the information shared with SweClockers in connection with the launch of the Radeon RX 6800 series. Then the situation looked extremely gloomy for those who wanted a graphics card of reference design, where the few tens that reached Sweden at the release were in principle the only chance. Thereafter, the series was intended to be immediately replaced with cards from AMD’s partners.

Changes from AMD can now be underway by continuing the production of graphics cards of reference design, to “make them available to as many gamers as possible” via the company’s own sales channels. Not only that, Corpus also talks about “SEP”, or recommended price – something that would mean the price tag of 649 USD for a Radeon RX 6800 XT.

In Sweden, AMD’s recommended was translated to the equivalent of SEK 6,999 at launch, a price tag that could not be met after the first few subsidized graphics cards disappeared in just a couple of minutes. Today’s cheapest Radeon RX 6800 XT is still listed today as “not in stock” – at the price tag of SEK 8,990. That AMD in Sweden would reduce the price by SEK 2,000 is currently seen as unlikely.
