AMD Radeon R9 380X with full-scale “Tonga” on input

When AMD launched the Radeon 300 series, the R7 360X, R7 370X and R9 380X with associated fully unlocked graphics circuits were missing, despite the fact that most were previously available in the 200 series. It has therefore not been seen as a big deal that these models will sooner or later find their way onto the market.

It now appears that AMD plans to fill the price gap between the Geforce GTX 960 and GTX 970 with the Radeon R9 380X, which is based on a full-scale version of the graphics processor Tonga. This would mean that the number of stream processors goes up from 1,792 for today’s R9,380 (formerly R9,285) up to 2,048.

Another change would be that the memory bus steps up from 256 to 384 bits, which in addition to higher theoretical bandwidth means more memory. Radeon R9 380 is currently available with 2 or 4 GB GDDR5 and for R9 380X it may be about 3 or 6 GB GDDR5 depending on price range.

What is said to be one of the first graphics cards according to AMD’s new guidelines is published online. The model from XFX has a cover in black with red accents, which covers the card’s aluminum flanges with four heat conduction tubes. The package is cooled by two fans of 100 millimeters, which are removable for easier cleaning.

Production of the Radeon R9 380X is already underway, which should mean a launch sometime during the autumn.
